Change in marriage therapy revolves around the concept of first love. First love is the love we have at first. It creates the being-in-love phase that makes us want to marry in the first place.
Leaving First Love
We leave our first love when the stressors of life come between spouses. First love erodes leaving us feeling distant and alone. We have reached this phase when we conclude, “If back then we were where we are now, we would have never married.”
Returning to First Love
The three-fold process to returning to first love is to:
(1) Remember what first love was like,
(2) Repent of your bad habits that contributed to your fall from first love, and
(3) Re-do the things you did when you were in love at first.
